An application of Carnapian inductive logic to an argument in the philosophy of statistics

چکیده
I claim that an argument from the philosophy of statistics can be improved by using Carnapian inductive logic. \citet{GelmanShalizi2012} criticise a philosophical account of how statisticians ought to choose statistical models which they call `the received view of Bayesian inference' and propose a different account inspired by falsificationist philosophy of science. I introduce another philosophical account inspired by Carnapian inductive logic and argue that it is even better than Gelman and Shalizi's falsificationist account.

An application of Carnapian inductive logic to philosophy of statistics
In my talk I claim that an argument in philosophy of statistics found in Gelman and Shalizi (2012) can be improved using Carnapian inductive logic. Gelman and Shalizi argue against the ‘conventional philosophy’ of Bayesian statistics, which stipulates that statistical models should be chosen only on the basis of how well they represent knowledge, and only draw conclusions on the basis of knowle...
متن کاملInductive Logic and Statistics
There are strong parallels between statistics and inductive logic. An inductive logic is a system of inference that describes the relation between propositions on data, and propositions that extend beyond the data, such as predictions over future data, and general conclusions on data. Statistics, on the other hand, is a mathematical discipline that describes procedures for deriving results abou...
متن کاملGoodman’s “Grue” Argument in Historical Perspective
I will focus on arguments against classical deductive and inductive logic (“relevantist” and “grue” arguments). The talk is mainly defensive. I won’t offer positive accounts of the “paradoxical” cases I will discuss (but, see “Extras”). I’ll begin with Harman’s defense of classical deductive logic against certain (epistemological) “relevantist” arguments. Then, I’ll argue that if you like Harma...
متن کاملWhy Believe That There Is a God?
This article presents an argument for the existence of God, showing that the evident phenomena are best explained by supposing that a God causes them. The argument is based on the inductive force of four very evident general phenomena: that there is a physical Universe; that it is governed by very simple natural laws; that those laws are such as to lead to the existence of human bodies; and tha...
متن کاملHistorical Development of Method in Science and Philosophy
The development and growth of science is based on method. Aristotle treated this issue seriously and formulated logic. Muslim thinkers accepted the comprehensibility of his idea and during some centuries developed it and exported to the west. During the last three centuries of the Middle Ages the issue of method was followed up seriously and induction enjoyed more importance. The scientific ...
